Hey, y'all! My name is Isabella, and I’m a college student learning how to navigate adulthood right alongside you! Today I will tell you How To Master Small Talk During Sorority Recruitment!
How to master small talk
1. Share beyond what your resume says
Don't just give facts about yourself; elaborate on each question.
Tell them about YOU and what makes you unique! Share your unique interests, experiences, and what you are excited about in college. Try to connect with the members over these specific interests. Chances are you were paired with them because you have something in common anyway!
You don't connect with members by just telling them facts. You connect with members when you elaborate on your passions and stories that make you, you.
2. Come prepared to answer the questions you know they will ask
Be prepared to answer the questions you know the sorority members will ask. You can find out what some of these questions will be from this post about 20+ Common Questions Sororities Will Ask During Sorority Recruitment.
Think about your answers to the basic questions and how you can elaborate on them to use them as conversation starters. I'm definitely NOT saying you should script your conversations or prepare them word for word; I'm just saying to have a vague idea of what your response would be.
tips & info about recruitment
- Most of your scores during recruitment will come from your conversations with each member. The members will vote based on that 30 or 45 minute interaction so this is why it is crucial.
- They aren't really looking for specific criteria of "She has to be in this major and from this hometown." They just want to see if you fit their "vibe" and personality and ultimately are seeing if y'all could get along! This is because if so then there's a great chance you'll get along well with the rest of the chapter.
- The members have preprepared questions they will ask if the conversation isn't really flowing to try to prompt you to speak about yourself and your experiences to gage your personality and morals. If you just answer each question with the bare minimum facts, the conversation won't flow. Your goal is to share as much about yourself as you feel comfortable with so that the sorority member can easily ask a follow-up question! You DON'T want them to have to go down the list and use 10 different preprepared questions. The more the member is stuck asking you the preprepared questions the harder it is to get a great score.
- Ex: In my chapter, when I was going through recruitment, I got asked about my Etsy business and the girl I was paired with had a Redbubble business! The conversation immediately flowed from there discussing what we sold, why we loved our small businesses, why we started it, etc. We didn't talk anymore about the scripted questions but instead focused on learning more about what we had in common and what each other was like!
I hope this post helped you to prepare for small talk during sorority recruitment! My most crucial tip however is to stay true to you!!!! You ultimately want to end up in a house that truly fits you where you are surrounded by people like you and the only way to do this is by being yourself. 🙂
With Love,
Isabella XO
