I was afraid going into it, but as a current Sophomore who went through sorority recruitment last year, here is my best advice and tips. PS. Check out How To Put Together The Perfect Sorority Recruitment Outfits if you're unsure of what to wear to rush this year!
Hey, y'all! My name is Isabella, and I’m a college student learning how to navigate adulthood right alongside you!! Today I will help you learn exactly how to prepare for sorority recruitment and what to expect!!
things to know
Pi Chi/Rho Chi, etc. = This will be a member of Panhellenic at your university who will be the leader of your group of about 15 PNMs throughout the sorority recruitment process.
PNM = Potential New Member
how it works
sorority recruitment Round 1--Ice Water Teas
This round calls for different things at different schools but is the same concept. This round introduces you to the houses and their philanthropy and gives a little insight into their chapter.
During this round, you will most likely meet virtually.
At my university, each Pi Chi group joins a Zoom where your Pi Chi will display a video prepared by each sorority. It is no longer than 5 minutes.
sorority recruitment Round 2--Philanthropy
During these days, you will be in each house for the shortest of the in-house rounds; mine was 30 minutes long. This round is centered around showing you the philanthropy of each chapter.
At my university, there were 3 days of philanthropy rounds; however, every school is different.
Also, at my university, during the philanthropy round, we were given a specific shirt to wear by Panhellenic, and it was paired with cute shorts of your choosing! I have provided an example below. I wore mine with Tory Burch flats, but people wear all kinds of shoes, from heels to cute tennis shoes to flats.
Sorority Recruitment Round 3--sisterhood
During this round, you will learn more about what each member you talk to finds special about their sisterhood. You will learn more about the kind of friendships that are fostered in each chapter.
These parties will be longer than the last rounds; ours lasted 45 minutes. The sisterhood rounds at my university also last 3 days in total.
At my university, we wear nice dresses with heels. I have shown an example below! This is what I wore to one of my sisterhood rounds.
sorority recruitment round 4--preference
For the preference round, it will only last one day, and you will have 2 houses left to go to. When you go in, it will be a more quiet setting and will last around 1 hour.
You will most likely talk to the people you know in the houses during this round if you know anyone. This is a more serious setting to help you truly decide which chapter of your top 2 will be your forever sisterhood.
At my university, we wear black dresses for preference round, so I have shown an example of what I would wear below! PS I'm absolutely dying over how adorable this dress is. This would be SO perfect for the preference round! Classy, fashionable, and flattering! What could be better?
tips & advice
- Be yourself.
- The worst thing you could do during the sorority rush process is pretend to be someone you aren't to get into a house you think you want. Do not decide based on status because if you choose a house you don't really love, you will struggle to find friendships and waste money.
- That said, be open-minded when one door closes and another opens for you.
- Go public on Instagram & clean up your Instagram.
- A lot of sorority recruitment is done beforehand by the active members, including those looking at your social media. So, if you are going through a sorority rush this upcoming year, be sure to make your Instagram public for an online resume!
- That being said, make sure your Instagram reflects you and is cute! Go through everything and think about whether each picture is something that portrays you in a good light or not.
- Bring a rush bag!
- I have made a complete list of What You Actually Need In Your Bag For Sorority Recruitment need to put in your bag for sorority recruitment, so be sure to check that out!
- But for now, a few of my essentials are my handheld fan, oil roller, comfy shoes to change into between parties, umbrella, deodorant, and a portable charger.
- Avoid talking about the 5 B's.
- Boys = This is not the time to talk about boys. At all. If you are going through sorority recruitment, it is clear you are looking for a genuine sisterhood to surround yourself with like-minded people. Therefore, this has nothing to do with boys.
- Booze = Do not talk about partying, the frats, bars, etc. These girls are searching for PNMs who will represent their chapter well, and if you talk about these things, they will assume you will not represent them well.
- Ballots = Do not talk about politics simply because this is not the setting. However, the girls want to get to know you, so if you plan on entering a field in politics or are very passionate about it, then this is fine to talk about.
- Belief = This is the same idea as ballots listed above. I was advised not to talk about it. However, this is a topic that was absolutely crucial to me when I was choosing what chapter I wanted to join, so I thoroughly discussed it with the girls in my chapter. Again, if you are passionate about it, talk about it, if it is controversial however, it is best not to share.
- Bucks = Do not brag or flaunt money in any way. This is simply poor manners and is not the way to get people to like you!
- Sororities do not define you.
- Remember that it does not determine your worth if you do not get the house you wanted back. Yes, it hurts. It will leave you thinking, what did I do wrong, or why didn't they like me? Sorority recruitment is a lot about numbers, and it
- However, I firmly believe that everything happens for a reason because it is God's plan for your life. When you're waiting in line to go to these houses, please, please do not compare yourself to others because you are a unique individual, and you will bring something new to whatever chapter is lucky to have you. Girls! Please don't take getting dropped personally, and as much as I hate to say it, be ready to accept some disappointment. You’re meeting so many wonderful people along the way, so make the best of it!!
- Above all else, remember that recruitment does not define you, so try your best to have fun! You are fully known, loved, pursued, and declared beautiful in the eyes of the Lord. This is what defines you. You are a child of God.
